Multi Fuel Stove

You may wonder how often a chimney sweep or associated service for your multi fuel stove is required. In short, annually as an absolute minimum. This helps ensure you comply with your home insurance policy. For best practice, in the case of your multi-fuel or wood burning stove, check with the manufacturer of your appliance, and consider how frequently you use it as well as the fuel you burn as you many need to sweep more regularly. Broadly speaking, the following fuels would require the following intervals.

Smokeless Coal – Min Requirement, Once Per Year
Standard Coal – Min Requirement, Twice Per Year
Dry Wood – Min Requirement, Twice Per Year
Mixed Wood – Min Requirement, Twice Per Year
Oil / Gas – Min Requirement, Once Per Year
Aga – Min Requirement, Once Per Year

When we visit, ensure any ornaments, or items, are removed from the area prior to our works. Please also ensure the fire is not lit, believe it or not, we have encountered this in the past.

Wood Burner Timber Options

Below, we have outlined some of our favourite woods for burning.

Ash – Widley considered a great choice. It has low smoke output, a beautiful flame pattern, provides plenty of heat, and is easily available throughout the UK.
Beech – This type of wood burns well, however, it takes longer to season as Beech has a high water content.
Birch – A quick burn but nevertheless great heat output, expect bright lively flames as well as a pleasing smell.
Cherry – A slow burning wood with good heat output and a pleasing smell. Perfect for Christmas.
Larch – Produces reasonable heat, like all Pine, it can leave oily and sticky deposits in the flue system when not burned at high temperatures.
Oak – A slow burning wood, nice flames and excellent, long-lasting heat.
Pine – Fast burning wood with a bright flame. Its’ high resin content can leave oily deposits that accumulate suit in the flue. Mix with other woods, and avoid a slow burn.
Yew – Slow burning wood with enormous heat.

Never use wet or unseasoned wood in your burner. It will produce a poor flame, create nuisance smoke, and build up soot and creosote. This then increases the risk of fire.
